Title : Climbing out of the uncanny valley
Abstract: The thought experiment of emotional response to human-likeness is ubiquitous within computer graphics. However the cause and solution to this negative emotional response (the uncanny valley) is not well defined. Amongst artists, it is suggested that eye and skin movement of a character's face are the most important factors in eliciting positive emotional response. New developments in motion capture and synthesis aim to capture realistic dynamics and appearance to bring human-like character creation out of the chasm. |
