As a result, it is typically not known exactly who is using a particular piece of software, and for what purpose. In this talk, I will present the design of Instrumented GIMP, or ingimp, a version of the GIMP that transparently collects usability data. These data are automatically uploaded to a central webserver where they are summarized and available for all to download and analyze. I will discuss the unique challenges of designing an application that automatically logs data that the general public will be able to access.
