Title : Turning an Interpreter into a Compiler
Abstract: Recently, I went to a 'hack-a-thon' in Colorado where I helped port various things to the Cell BE. One of the projects I worked on was a port of Mesa to the Cell. To accelerate it, Brian Paul and I decided to get the fragment shading running on the SPE vector cores. Mesa already had a byte-code interpreter that it used for this. With some relatively minor modifications, we were able to turn this interpeter into a compiler for the SPEs. The result has hardly been tuned, but now has an 80x speedup over the interpreted version. |
