Title: A Formal Description for Visualizing Boolean Queries
Abstract: Data selection by querying, with a visualization-based user interface,
is the dominant visual method for seeking information in large
knowledge bases. Most commonly users supply queries as Boolean
expressions, which are hard for humans to manipulate successfully.
Visual query specification allows users to exploit their visual
reasoning skills, better to generate and understand Boolean queries.
Many techniques exist for visual query specification, but there is
at present no formalism providing a general mathematical structure
within which they can be understood.
This presentation describes a mathematical formalism that contains a
general method for designing visual query interfaces. The formalism
functions as a source of innovative query designs, some of which are
presented here.
5. General Discussion Items
-
CS 488 t-shirts: They're here; they're going fast (or even if they're
not); see Steve to get yours, soon. The cost is $21.
-
Alias is hiring; Oculus Information is hiring; Side Effects is hiring!
If you want a job get one soon. Even better, get two or three.
-
Time for CS888 this term: 15.30 on Wednesdays.
- 16.30 today for organizational meeting.
- Computer vision and image processing algorithms suggested topic.
-
DC1304 not available for lab meeting on: June 2, June 16, June 23, Aug 25. Please keep this until that time.
-
In an attempt to determine what programs cause problems, please send me an
e-mail when your program or X session or machine crashes.
-
GI Conference next week: There are 2 cars from CGL going there every
day and a
few spots are still available, Anyone interested should contact Bryan or
Tibi.
6. Action List
-
Tibi will be lab manager this term. Possible things we need to get
done:
- LDAP,
- dual-booting of Linux machines,
- workstation rearrangement and lab rewiring.
