    Title:
Ramachandran's Neurological Theory of Aesthetic Experience
    Abstract:
Our propensity to create and enjoy works of art is probably among the most puzzling aspects of human nature, and yet we can trace back forms of artistic expressions to the very beginning of humanity... Even if what we regard as beautiful might vary according to culture and experience, it doesn't follow that there is no genetically specified mechanism - a common denominator underlying all types of art. I will present in this talk a paper by V.S. Ramachandran and W. Hirstein "The Science of Art : A Neurological Theory of Aesthetic Experiencem" published in Art and the Brain : Controversies in Science & the Humanities (Journal of Consciousness Studies, 6, No. 6-7, 1999, pp. 15-51). R & H try (very ambitiously) to answer some of these questions and present a theory of human artistic experience and the neural mechanisms that mediate it.
