Title:
Extending the Model for Two-Handed Interaction

Abstract:
In order to create two-handed (bimanual) computer interfaces that work effectively, it is necessary to build an accurate model of how two-handed tasks work in the physical world. Interface designers currently use the Kinematic Chain Model of two-handed cooperation described by Guiard. However, the subset of tasks in which two hands are joined by some intermediate object (tying a string around something, measuring something with a tape, shooting an arrow with a bow, etc) may not fit into Guiard's model. A model that takes physical constraints into account is described and implications for interfaces and systems will be discussed.
