A Progressive Mesh (PM) is a data structure that defines a continuous level-of-detail (LOD) representation of a triangle mesh of arbitrary topology. The PM representation of a geometric model can be used for mesh simplification, progressive transmission, mesh compression, and realtime LOD; extensions to the PM framework have been developed that allow view-dependent refinement (useful for large terrain meshes, for example). In this talk I will give an overview of the PM construction algorithm, and present some results from my implementation of the algorithm.
