- Title:
- Implementing Virtual Walls in Haptic Interfaces
- Abstract:
-
When exploring a virtual environment with a haptic interface you are bound
to bump into a virtual wall at some point. This basic element seems like
a simple one to implement. It should simply resist the users attempts to
penetrate it, providing the illusion of the presence of a stiff wall.
However, with simple implementations, haptic interfaces become unstable at
the surface of the wall, producing undesirable oscillations that make
the wall feel like it is vibrating. This presentation will talk about the
causes of these instabilities and some solutions offered by various
authors.
