Accelerated OpenGL with XFree86 and Linux
http://www.cgl.uwaterloo.ca/~jfpatry/dr/
Abstract:
Support for high-performance 3D graphics under Linux is rapidly
evolving. Many hardware and software vendors (including SGI, nVidia,
3dfx, ATI Technologies, Alias|Wavefront, Side Effects Software, etc.),
have announced support for their products under Linux. Currently,
accelerated OpenGL rendering is possible using several consumer-level
graphics cards and the Mesa Graphics Library (a high-quality OpenGL
"clone").
However, integration with XFree86 -- the X Server most commonly used
under Linux -- is still in its infancy. This limits the types of 3D
applications that can currently run on Linux, since accelerated OpenGL
rendering is only available in full-screen mode.
In this talk I will discuss the efforts underway to add
high-performance OpenGL support to the XFree86 X Server. I will give
an overview of the GLX graphics library extension which allows OpenGL
and the X Window System to work together. I will then discuss the new
Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI) for XFree86 4.0, which aims to
overcome some of the performance limitations of the indirect rendering
model normally used by GLX.
