- Title:
- Using UI Scripting to Teach Basic Programming Principles
- Abstract:
-
I recently had the chance to try to get about 100 grade 7/8
students excited about computer science. I had them play with the UI
elements in a Tcl/Tk script in order to demonstrate the ideas of
variables, procedures, etc. I'll talk about the successes and the problems
that I encountered during this experience.

Canada's Smart Communities
David Johston
President-Designate, University of Waterloo
ABSTRACT
Smart Communities will showcase and promote information and
communication technologies so they benefit all Canadians. This
presentation will highlight recommendations to the federal government
of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Smart Communities. The Smart Community
initiative is a promising vision, one of excellence, innovation and
lifelong learning. Smart Communities will ensure that their citizens
are able to participate in the constantly evolving knowledge society.
The changing role of broadband community networks, connectivity, and
services as they relate to Smart Communities will also be discussed.

Programmable distributed management of networked systems
Raouf Boutaba
Dept. Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto
ABSTRACT
The management of today's and future networked environments
requires far more than network management in the traditional
sense. It must deal with: integration of
telecommunications and data communications; flexible and
adaptable communication structures (intelligent networks, virtual
workgroups and networks, mobile communication); new services
(teleservices, multimedia communication, corporate networks);
and the ever increasing dependence of distributed applications
on these services. These requirements make management of the
overall environment a complex and vital task. Network management
is in itself a distributed application, and the general
distributed system design principles, methods, and tools are
applicable to developing and running such applications. Today, the
coupling between "distributed systems" and "network management" is
very weak. The management functions pertaining to distributed systems
and applications aspects often are disconnected from the
underlying network management, and specialized software
platforms and tools are used for the development of network
management applications. In order to achieve a truly integrated
management of network and distributed systems aspects, both of these
disparities need to be addressed.
