Title: Better Pasting Through Quasi-interpolation
Abstract:
Hierarchical surface pasting is a method for adding detail to a smooth surface without increasing the complexity of the base surface. The detail is added by placing tensor product B-spline surfaces on top of the base surface. The method by which the detail surfaces are constructed is fairly fast, but it produces details whose boundaries are less-than-perfect approximations of the base surface. Thus, the composite surface often contains gaps between the base and detail surfaces. We will describe a technique called "quasiinterpolation" which may be used to approximate functions. We will then outline how this technique may be applied to surface pasting to produce higher quality surfaces without negatively impacting on the cost of the pasting procedure.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Who: Viet-Tam Luu
Where: DC1304
When: Thu March 26, 4:30-5:30pm

What:
OpenGL is a graphics library, or rather a "software interface to graphics
hardware" that allows one to easily write programs with high-performance,
interactive three-dimensional graphics. This talk will provide a brief
introduction to OpenGL: a summary of its features and capabilities, and an
overview of the concepts and techniques used in programming with OpenGL.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Who: Mert Cramer
Where: MC5136
When: Wed April 1, 3:30-4:30pm

What:
The Loose Nut That Holds The Keyboard:

The Effect of the Failures of Subtlety and the Violation of the Laws of
Stussy, Freud and William of Occam on software use.

  ---------

If I were to chase you with a meat cleaver, it is unlikely you would pay
any attention to a performance of Aida, even if the cast were stark
naked. All of us have had experiences where the emotional state
  controlled the logical response.

Are software systems any different from meat cleavers? Nope! The same
organization of priorities affects how a person reacts to a software
system. The lack of recognition of the "emotional human" by designers
and scientists limits the effectiveness of their efforts.
