Title:
How do people find stuff?
Abstract:
Looking for stuff is a common human experience. I study the
ways in which human visual search processes operate. The more
we know about how these processes work, and what tasks are easy
vs. difficult for them to perform, the better we can design user
interfaces that enhance performance rather than impeding it. I
will tell you about the kinds of experiments that we use to
investigate what goes on when you look for stuff. I will discuss
experiments that peek into the timecourse of processing when you
look for something of a particular colour, as well as some attempts
at extending these techniques to shape-from-shading.
