Playing Better Scrabble (R) ==========================Scrabble (R) is often thought of as a game for quiet Sunday afternoons, but it is also played in tournaments world-wide, where it is strategic and vicious. I will give tips for better play, including rack management, board management, end-game play, and game psychology, and conclude with a demonstration game at the expert level.

Abstract:
In the first part of this presentation a multiparadigm learning approach is advocated. Several neural network learning algo- rithms have been developed through integration of various comput- ing paradigms including mathematical optimization, genetic algo- rithms, fuzzy sets, and parallel processing and applied to the problem of image recognition. In the second part of this presentation a neural dynamics model is presented for automated optimum design of large structures made of discrete shapes and subjected to the highly nonlinear constraints of the commonly used design specifications. The model is applied to several examples including a 144 story su- perhighrise steel building structure with over 20,000 members.Biographical Sketch:
Hojjat Adeli is currently Professor of Civil Engineering and member of Center for Cognitive Science at The Ohio State Univer- sity. He has authored over 250 research publications including four books since he received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1976. His most recent book is entitled, Machine Learning - Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, and Fuzzy Systems, published by Wiley in 1995. He has edited ten books including, Advances in Design Optimization, published by Chapman and Hall in 1994. He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of two research journals in- cluding, Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering. He has served on the organizing/advisory committee of over 50 national and inter- national conferences. He has presented keynote/plenary lectures at national and international conferences held in Italy (1989), Mexico (1991), Japan (1991), China (1992), Canada (1992), Portu- gal (1992), USA (1993), Germany (1993), Morocco (1994), Singapore (1994), and Australia (1995).Everyone is welcome.
