Canonical examples of problems solvable using calculus of variations include the brachistochrone problem (designing a curve between two given points that is traversed the fastest by a particle under the influence of gravity) and Plateau's problem (which involves finding the surface of minimal area given the boundary contour). In this talk, I will provide a brief introduction to calculus of variations and present a relatively recent application of it to finding geodesic distance fields using diffusion of heat.
