TPABSTRACT:There is a form of structuring what we say or write that seduces your audience and keeps them with you. It's called telling a story. As a dispassionate scientist you are suppsed to be above such cheap tricks. The writing you do as a student, the advice you get from your supervisor, the nasty comments you get from referees all discourage youfrom such bad rhetorical tricks. Yet meta-research, research into research, tells us that manuscripts using such techniques are more likely to be accepted and cited. What gives?
